Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran

Welcome to our Clean and Green Program!

The municipality of Malinao has been part of the Gawad Pangulo Sa Kapaligiran Program since its inception in 1987, when it was then called the Clean and Green Program. The municipality has been a consistent winner in this contest, even vying for the regional crown in l998. Only when the municipality's newly-built slaughterhouse became non-functional because of its proximity to the collapsing bank of the Aklan River did its ranking among the 17 municipalities of Aklan declined. Still it is among the top 5 in the province. In 2001, Malinao was in 3rd place.

This year (2002), the evaluation for the Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran (Clean and Green) Program is scheduled for the week of July 9, 2002, and again, Malinao is an ideal candidate for the Clean and Green award.

The Malinao Town Plaza now - the centerpiece of the municipality's Clean and Green Program

The town of Malinao, Aklan is beautifully laid out. It has the classical Spanish colonial town plan where the structures of the two pillars of authority - the Roman Catholic Church and the government face each other. In between are open public spaces - the plaza, the childrens' playground, the basketball court, the tennis court.

Rizal Monument

In this setting, the plaza is considered the center of the town with the monument of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, as its nucleus. On both sides of the plaza are the houses of the old families of the town. In a grid pattern are the residences of the townspeople.

On the east of town, just beyond the public market, is the Aklan River. Just beyond Santa Maria St. on the south is the Malinao River.

Only one old house, the house of Tan Panyong (Mayor Epifanio Imperial - 1955) survived World War II, when guerillas burned all the big houses in town to deny the Japanese Army sanctuary.

Tan Panyong's house

Most of the houses now were built by money coming from abroad as most families in the poblacion have members working or residing in other lands.

Malinao is a clean town. The plaza is green and the roads in the poblacion are cemented. Within the poblacion the streets are lined with trees. Our playgrounds and public places are planted with trees, shrubs and ornamental plants.
