Holy Week in Malinao: A Look Back

A photo essay on the Yerro Family's San Juan Celebration in 1986

Like in any other town in Catholic Philippines, Holy Week is observed in Malinao with much color and pageantry. Practically each prominent family in town has a patron saint whom they venerate especially during the Holy Week. These patron saints are part of the Holy Week's processions enacting Jesus's way of the cross to the Calvary. This photo essay is a look back to the 1986 Holy Week of the Yerro family (whose members include the present mayor, Mayor Joji Ilio) when most of the family's partriarchs and martriachs were still living.

San Juan is the patron saint of the Yerro family. Every year, during Holy Week, members of the family gather to participate in the Malinao's Holy Week celebration in which their patron saint is an integral part of the procession. More importantly, the dressing of San Juan evolved into the clan's reunion in which Yerros from all over the world congregate in their ancestral home. In 1986, the hosts were the heirs of Don Martin Yerro with the event held at the home of Juanito and Carmelita Yerro on Sto. Rosario St., Malinao, Aklan.
