In January 1897, Candido Iban and Francisco Castillo, disguised as pearl divers, came to Aklan to organize a branch of the Katipunan designed to overthrow the Spanish rule in the island. Lilo-an became the center of the revolutionary movement west of the Aklan River.
In March 1897, Gen. Candido Iban, with an aide, went to meet Gen. Francisco Castillo at Bay-ang, a place between Kalibo and New Washington. While passing the town of Lezo, he was arrested by the Spanish authorities from Kalibo.
The generalšs followers in Lilo-an under the leadership of Benito Iban, a brother of Gen. Candido Iban and the Yonsal brothers, Nemesio and Gavino upon hearing of the arrest of their leader, decided to liberate Gen. Iban. When Capitan Agustin Ilejay learned of the plot, he tried to dissuade the Katipuneros and quarrel ensued which resulted to the death of Nemesio and Capitan Agustin. Later on March 23, 1897, Gen. Candido Iban, together with his comrades Gavino Yonsal and Benito Iban, were among the XIX Martyrs executed by the Spanish authorities in Kalibo.
